زمینه: میکروپلاستیک­ها، آلاینده­های نوظهور و پایداری هستند که در همه بخش‌‌های محیط زیست پراکنده هستند و می‌توانند به عنوان تهدیدی برای محیط زیست و انسان محسوب شوند.
مواد و روش‌ها: این مقاله مروری به بررسی مقالات منتشر شده در خصوص فراوانی میکروپلاستیک­ها در آب، رسوبات و آبزیان خلیج‌فارس می‌پردازد و همچنین روش‌های نمونه‌برداری، آماده‌سازی نمونه‌ها و تشخیص آن‌ها در مقالات مختلف ارائه و جمع‌بندی شده است.
یافته‌ها: نتایج نشان داد که کشورهای مختلف، سهم بسیار متفاوتی در آلودگی میکروپلاستیکی خلیج‌فارس دارند؛ به طوری که نتایج گزارش شده از بخش ایران (به خصوص رسوبات ساحلی) چندین برابر بیشتر از کشورهای عربی می­باشد. به‌طور کلی فیبرهای آبی و سیاه فراوانترین میکروپلاستیک‌های خلیج‌فارس هستند. میکروپلاستیک‌های کم چگال بیشتر در آب دریا شناسایی شده و میکروپلاستیک­های با چگالی بیشتر در رسوبات تشخیص داده شده‌اند. حال آنکه نوع پلاستیک­های شناسایی شده در بدن آبزیان به محل زندگی آن‌ها وابسته است.
نتیجه‌گیری: آلودگی میکروپلاستیک به شدت محیط زیست خلیج‌فارس را تهدید می­کند. با اینحال، نبود دستورالعمل یکسان برای انجام مراحل مختلف و ارائه گزارش، مقایسه نتایج به‌دست آمده از مطالعات متفاوت را پیچیده می‌کند. به‌طور مثال، در چهار مطالعه انجام شده در آب­های خلیج‌فارس، تعداد میکروپلاستیک­ها با سه واحد مختلف گزارش شده است. به طور مشابه در مورد رسوبات و آبزیان نیز واحد یکسانی وجود ندارد. بنابراین، پیشنهاد می­شود که مطالعات بیشتری با استفاده از روش­های یکسان و بهینه در خلیج‌فارس انجام شود تا نتایج گزارش شده قابل بحث و مقایسه باشند.
