زمینه: گسل‌های فعال در واقع به ‌عنوان مهم‌ترین عامل ورود رادون و تورون به سطح زمین می‌باشند. قرار گرفتن مناطق مسکونی بر روی این گسل‌ها یکی از دلایل اصلی افزایش تراکم این دو گاز رادیواکتیو در آنها است.

مواد و روش‌ها: با استفاده از دستگاه اندازه‌گیری RTM1688 میزان غلظت رادون و تورون در 200 منزل مسکونی نزدیک به گسل‌های فعال در خراسان شمالی واقع در شمال شرق ایران اندازه‌گیری شد.

یافته‌ها: دامنه اندازه‌گیری‌های رادون از 12 بکرل بر متر مکعب تا 188 بکرل بر متر مکعب با مقدار متوسط 43/75 بکرل بر مترمکعب ثبت شد. بیش‌ترین دوز جذبی مؤثر سالیانه در نمونه‌ها 45/5 میلی‌سیورت و کم‌ترین مقدار 35/0 میلی‌سیورت با میانگین 187/2 میلی‌سیورت محاسبه شد. دامنه مقادیر تورون از صفر تا 840 بکرل بر متر مکعب با مقدار متوسط 48/325 بکرل بر متر مکعب ثبت شد. بیش‌ترین دوز جذبی مؤثر سالیانه تورون 17/21 میلی‌سیورت و کم‌ترین مقدار آن صفر با مقدار میانگین 20/8 میلی‌سیورت محاسبه شد.

نتیجه‌گیری: نتایج نشان می‌دهد که در نواحی نزدیک به گسل‌های فعال شمال شرق ایران؛ تراکم گاز تورون، دو تا سه برابر حد مجاز است. همچنین مشخص شد که درصدی از مناطق مسکونی مورد مطالعه که در معرض دوز جذبی مؤثر سالیانه بیشتر از حد مجاز قرار دارند، برای رادون برابر 20 درصد و برای تورون برابر با 54 درصد می‌باشد. تراکم بالای رادون و تورون در منازل مسکونی منطقه، بیانگر نقش مؤثر گسل‌های فعال در تولید گازهاست و می‌تواند احتمال ابتلا به بیماری‌های ریوی را افزایش دهد.
