Background: New technologies make considerable changes in different fields including medicine. Telemedicine is one of these technologies that can improve equality of access and enhance the quality of care in healthcare services. Evaluation of physicians’ knowledge and attitude has a key role in recognition of this technology. This study aimed to assess the specialist physicians’ perspective toward telemedicine and  discover the barriers in the application of this technology in Tabriz university teaching hospitals.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017using a questionnaire. This questionnaire consists of 4 sections (Knowledge, Attitude, Barriers, and usage rate). One hundred and seventeen specialist physicians of Tabriz teaching hospitals were participated based on convenience sampling method.
Results: Knowledge of %33.55 of physicians about telemedicine was low. About %68 of physicians believed that using telemedicine has improved the healthcare service. %45.3 of physicians had been used telemedicine which mainly was related to consultation by telephone. Lack of culture for using telemedicine, lack of knowledge about this technology and lack of facilities were the most critical barriers against the establishment of telemedicine.
Conclusion: This study showed that the knowledge and usage level of specialist physicians about telemedicine was low. However, the level of openness acceptance rate of telemedicine was high. For elimination of the barriers and appropriate implementation of this technology, specialist physicians require comprehensive education for orientation with telemedicine services. Also the establishment of infrastructures including both cultural and technical is necessary.
