بیولوژی سینتتیک یک رشته دانشی نوین است که با خلق یک میکروارگانیسم مصنوعی توسط کریگ ونتر که دارای حداقل ژنوم کمینه سازگار با زیست بود، موجب برافروختن بحث‌های پیشین فلسفی پیرامون چیستی حیات گردیده است. همچنین پیشرفت‌های اخیر بیولوژی سینتتیک موجب بحث و گفتگوهای نوین فلسفی پیرامون موجودات هیبرید ”ارگانیسم‌های سینتتیک“ و ”ماشین‌های زنده“ و تفاوت بنیادین میان ماشین های بیولوژیک و جهان زنده شده است. این نوشتار، ضمن تجزیه و تحلیل نقادانه به چشم‌اندازهای فلسفی درباره طراحی ارگانیسم‌های سینتتیک، زیست کمینه و حیات مصنوعی، به چگونگی خلق دانش در بیولوژی سینتتیک بر پایه فراز ریچارد فاینمن ”آنچه که من نتوانم خلق کنم، درک نمی‌کنم" نیز می‌پردازد.
