Iranian South Medical Journal Iran South Med J 1735-4374 1735-6954 10.52547/ismj Articles in Press Investigating the Occurrence and Abundance of Microplastics in Dust settled in Indoor and Outdoor Environments of Residential Houses in Kermanshah Seyed Enayat Hashemi Monireh Nouri Sepideh Naseri Hoshiyar Hossini hoo.hosseini@gmail.com Background: Microplastics are persistent environmental pollutants. Their presence in water resources, air and food chains is a growing concern all over the world. Since air is a strong environmental substrate, the release and effects of airborne microplastics can remain localized or far beyond the point of release. In this study, the indoor and outdoor air pollution of residential houses in Kermanshah city was investigated. Materials and Methods: In order to collect samples, different parts of the house including the room, re-ception, kitchen, corridor, yard and roof were selected as sampling points. A total of 10 stations were se-lected as sampling points. After washing with distilled water, the samples were transferred to the laborato-ry through a fiberglass filter (diameter 47 mm, 1.1 μm) and filtered using a vacuum pump. After preparing and extracting the above samples, the visual method was used for quantitative and qualitative detection of microplastic. Results: The results of the study confirmed the presence of microplastics in all samples. The frequency of microplastics was 158 and 4480 per square meter. Indoor samples were significantly more than outdoor samples. The highest frequency is related to black fibers and they are attributed to the origin of textiles. Also, more than 78% of the samples were determined to be less than 500 micrometers in size. Conclusion: Potential exposure to microplastic-contaminated air is unavoidable, and currently our knowledge about the release of microplastics in indoor air, as well as the factors affecting microplastic transmission, is lacking. There is a need for more studies focusing on these issues, because they are of great importance in assessing the potential risk of microplastics on human health. microplastic dust air quality indoor environment outdoor environment 01 0 0 http://ismj.bpums.ac.ir/article-1-1868-en.pdf

Iranian South Medical Journal Iran South Med J 1735-4374 1735-6954 10.52547/ismj Articles in Press Comparing the Effect of Tocilizumab and Methylprednisolone Pulse on Mortality and Outcomes in Patients with Severe COVID-19 in Bushehr Razeah Rastegar r_rastegar64@yahoo.com Marzeah Heidary Nilofar Motamed Fatemeh Abbasi Background: The effect of Tocilizumab and high dose of corticosteroid on COVID-19 mortality and out-comes is equivocal. This study was designed to compare the effect of Tocilizumab and Methylpredniso-lone Pulse dose on mortality, prognosis and duration of admission in severe COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: The above research was a retrospective study conducted on 131 people with severe covid-19 whom were admitted in acute respiratory ward of Bushehr Persian gulf Martyrs hospital in the first half of 1400. Of these people, 66 patients in the pulse methylprednisolone group and 65 people in Tocilizumab group were registered, and compared in terms of paraclinical results, clinical outcomes and imaging characteristics. Results: The results of the study showed that the percentage of deaths , the average duration of hospitali-zation after treatment in the pulse methylprednisolone group and in the Tocilizumab group, and degree of intubation requirement in both groups were not statistically significant (P>0/05). The degree of CRP and arterial oxygen saturation improvement after treatment in both groups were statistically significant (P<0/01).  Conclusion: High dose of Methylprednisolone in severely ill patients had more effect on healing rate and increasing arterial oxygenation and inflammatory marker, CRP, drop. But there is no difference in mortality rate and prognosis between two drugs. Therefore Methylprednisolone pulse dose is a good alternative treatment in severe COVID-19 for Tocilizumab . Iranian South Medical Journal Iran South Med J 1735-4374 1735-6954 10.52547/ismj Articles in Press Evaluation of Appendicitis with Enterobius ver-micularis in Pathology Samples of the Last 10 Years in Bushehr District, 2012-2022 Maeadeh Haddadan Mohammad Reza Farzaneh Batol Amiri Shahla Zamani Ali Reza Sahebani Afshin Barazesh afshin914@gmail.com Background: The ectopic presence of helminths and their eggs in the appendiceal duct can directly and indirectly with antigenic stimuli lead to the hyperplasia of lymphatic follicles in the wall of the duct and thereby cause duct obstruction and subsequently, acute appendicitis. The present study was designed to determine the extent of this role as well as the frequency of appendectomy samples with E. vermicularis during the last 10 years in Bushehr. Materials and Methods: A number of 3210 slides related to appendiceal samples of appendectomy pa-tients were collected in Bushehr during the last 10 years (2013-2023) and examined in terms of microana-tomy. The results of microscopic evaluation as well as the information in the files of the samples were summarized and the data were analyzed with SPSS statistical software and chi-square test. Results: The frequency of appendicitis caused by E. vermicularis in the studied samples was 0.8% and it has been decreasing in recent years. There was a significant relationship between appendicitis caused by E. vermicularis and the gender and age of the patients, but there was no significant relationship with the place of residence of the patients. Conclusion: Considering the decreasing trend of appendicitis caused by Enterobius during the recent years in Bushehr, the effect of the covid pandemic can be considered to be involved in this conclusion. It is suggested to carry out preliminary evaluations for the early diagnosis of this parasitic infection, espe-cially in infected areas, in order to eliminate unnecessary surgical interventions. Iranian South Medical Journal Iran South Med J 1735-4374 1735-6954 10.52547/ismj Articles in Press Evaluation of the Presence of anti-Toxoplasma Antibodies in Women with Normal and Aborted Delivery Afshin Barazesh Zahra Heydari Elham Rahmani Neda Shadvar Morad Ali Fouladvand mfouladvand35@gmail.com Background: Congenital toxoplasmosis during early pregnancy may lead to the death of the fetus or cause irreversible complications in the fetus. In the present research, the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies in pregnant women with an abortion history were determined in comparison with natural pregnancy referring to Bushehr medical centers. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 150 blood samples were collected from pregnant women with a history of abortion and normal pregnancy referred to Bushehr clinics from May 2020 to May 2021. Sera were tested for anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies by using ELISA meth-od. The results along with the questionnaire information were analyzed using SPSS software and Chi-square test. Results: Around 18.7% were seropositive and 81.3% were seronegative for anti-Toxoplasma IgG/IgM antibodies. Results showed that there was a significant relationship between the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibody with abortion and also educational levels, habitat and how to wash vegetables. However, there was no a statistically significant relationship between infection and some of the analyzed variables such as history of contact with cat, number of pregnancies, deliveries and abortions and some nutritional behaviors. Conclusion: Chronic form of toxoplasmosis can be considered as a factor for recurrent miscarriages in pregnant women. Due to the emphasis of some researchers on the insignificance of this relationship, the issue is debatable and needs further studies in this area.
