در دهه 1950 و 1960 میلادی با انجام اولین پیوندهای کلیه، امیدهای دانش پزشکی برای یافتن راهی مناسب جهت درمان بیماران مراحل انتهایی کلیوی و دیالیزی زنده شد. اما با توجه به اساس ایمونولوژی پیوند و استفاده از داروهای سرکوب کننده ایمنی و عوارض جانبی آنها، بیماران با عوارض شدید و جبران‌ناپذیری که گاهی منجر به مرگ آنها می‌شد مواجه می‌شدند. به همین جهت، در سال‌های اخیر، دانش پزشکی در همگرایی با فناوری، رویکردی جدید بنام پزشکی بازآفرینشی یا بازساختی را در پیش گرفته است که البته این روش نیز به نوبه خود دارای چالش‌ها و پیچیدگی‌های خاص خود می‌باشد. اما با توجه به توانایی‌های بالقوه ترمیمی در موجودات دریایی نظیر ستاره دریایی، ممکن است بتوان بر پاره‌ای از چالش‌های موجود در این روش چیرگی یافت. نتایج حاصل از مطالعات اخیر بر روی فرآیندهای تکاملی کلیه انسان و تکامل و ترمیم در ستاره دریایی و وجود مسیرها و سایتوکین‌های مشترک بین این فرآیندها، خود گویای این ادعا است. این نوشتار، شواهد و مدارکی را ارائه می‌دهد که بیانگر عملی بودن استفاده از ستاره دریایی جهت طراحی و بازآرایی کلیه انسان است.
