زمینه: سال‌ها است که استفاده از گیاهان دارویی در کنترل بیماری‌های مختلف مرسوم می‌باشد. کوئرستین به عنوان یک عضو فلاونوییدی دارای خواص آنتی اکسیدانی و ضدالتهابی است. این مطالعه به منظور تحقیق بر روی اثرات احتمالی سودمند کوئرستین در تخفیف علایم آنسفالومیلیت خودایمن تجربی (EAE) انجام شده است.
مواد و روش‌ها: در این مطالعه تجربی، EAE توسط نخاع هموژنیزه شده خوکچه هندی و ادجوانت کامل فروند در رت‌های نژاد ویستار القا شد. سپس رت‌ها در سه گروه 10 سر قرار گرفتند. درمان با کوئرستین (10 میلی‌گرم بر کیلوگرم روزانه خوراکی) از روز 12 بعد از ایمن‌سازی زمانی که رت‌ها اولین نشانه‌ی علایم درمانگاهی را نشان دادند آغاز شد. نمونه‌های مغز و خون از حیوانات در روز 36 اخذ شده و جهت آزمایشات بعدی مورد استفاده قرار گرفت.
یافته‌ها: درمان با کوئرستین منجر به بروز نتایج مناسبی در رت‌های مبتلا به EAE در مقایسه با رت‌های مبتلا بدون درمان شد. میزان آنزیم‌های میلوپراکسیداز و نیتریک اکساید سرمی و مالون دی آلدئید در بافت مغز رت‌های مبتلا نسبت به گروه کنترل سالم افزایش معنی‌دار داشت (05/0>P). میزان اسیداوریک در سرم رت‌های مبتلا نسبت به گروه کنترل سالم کاهش یافت (05/0>P).
نتیجه‌گیری: به نظر می رسد درمان با کوئرستین می تواند به عنوان یک استراتژی سودمند جهت افزودن به پروتکل افراد مبتلا به مالتیپل اسکلروزیس در نظر گرفته شود.
