Background: Constipation is a very common disorder in adults. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between sleep hours during the week and weekends with constipation in individuals.
Materials and Methods: This study is a clinical/experimental trial and was conducted on outpatients who referred to the gastroenterology department of Shahid Mustafa Hospital in Ilam. The questionnaires used in our study included tools to collect information about demographic characteristics and constipation symptoms, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Constipation System Scale, Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms, and Constipation Quality of Life Assessment Scale.
Results: Of the 97 patients with chronic constipation, 47 patients had sleep disorders and 50 patients had normal sleep. Constipation severity based on sleep group The sleep disorder and normal sleep groups had a significant difference in their CSS scores (P = 0.03), rectal symptoms (P = 0.047) and abdominal symptoms (P = 0.000) were also significantly different between the two groups. No significant difference was observed for stool symptoms. The correlation coefficient of sleep disturbance with physical symptoms of chronic constipation in patients was reported to be significantly positive and direct.
Conclusion: The severity of constipation was higher in patients with sleep disturbance, and with increasing severity of constipation, the quality of life of patients with sleep disturbance decreased. Improvement of constipation symptoms and quality of life in patients with chronic constipation after resolving sleep disturbance is required for follow-up and also for accurate evaluation.
