Background: Skin cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, with increasing incidence and mortality rate. Knowledge of its epidemiological patterns is essential for prevention and control. Due to the limited evidence available in Bushehr city, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and distribution of skin cancers over a ten-year period in this region.
Materials and Methods: Pathology reports of patients diagnosed with skin cancers in Bushehr from 2012 to 2021 were reviewed. Data on age, sex, histological type, and anatomical site of the lesions were extracted and analyzed using SPSS to determine frequency distributions.
Results: A total of 259 cases of skin cancer were identified, with a mean patient age of 63.38 years. Women were affected 1.1 times more frequently than men. Basal cell carcinoma was the most common malignancy, followed by squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and basosquamous carcinoma. The face was the most frequently involved site, followed by the scalp, hands, and back. Across all histological types, the face remained the predominant site of involvement.
Conclusion: The findings indicate a rising trend in the prevalence of skin cancers in Bushehr over the past decade. Given the predominance of facial lesions and the high frequency of basal cell carcinoma, public health interventions should prioritize early detection, community education, and preventive strategies such as sun protection. Strengthening screening and awareness programs is recommended to reduce the future burden of skin malignancies in this population.
