Background: With its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, resveratrol has significant protective effects on the heart. Despite the numerous therapeutic effects of resveratrol in traditional medicine, its anti-inflammatory effects are not conclusively approved. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the protective effects of resveratrol in reducing inflammatory factors in patients after coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted as a case-control study on 60 patients presenting to Bushehr Heart Center who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting. Patients were divided into a control and intervention group. The control group consisted of patients who underwent CABG surgery without receiving resveratrol, whereas the intervention group included patients who received resveratrol capsules at a dose of 250 mg twice daily, following the surgery. Resveratrol administration in the intervention group continued for 60 days from the tenth day post-surgery. At the beginning and end of the study, 10 mL of blood was collected from all patients in both groups to assess the blood levels of inflammatory factors.
Results: The results showed that the changes in serum levels of C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were greater in the intervention group compared to the control group. Accordingly, the mean levels of these inflammatory factors decreased more in the intervention group than in the control group. Although the changes in white blood cell count were greater in the intervention group compared to the control group, this difference was not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Resveratrol as a strong antioxidant improved heart function and decreased inflammatory factors in the studied patients.
